Meet Dawn!

My journey to Nourishing Modern Families didn’t happen overnight.

I grew up with a love for food and family, but it took years of experience, questions, and learning to understand just how important traditional food skills could be.

As our family grew, so did my desire to learn how to prepare food in a way that was nourishing, practical, and something we could actually maintain as a family.

I began learning more about traditional foods, food preparation, fermentation, properly prepared grains, cultured foods, and the wisdom found in traditional foodways.

What started as something I was learning for my own family eventually became something I wanted to share with others.

From Learning to Teaching

Over the years, I continued learning, practicing, and teaching.

I became a Certified GAPS Coach and a Certified Foot Zoner, and I have been involved in the Weston A. Price Foundation community since 2006.

But some of my most important education has happened right in my own kitchen and on our farm.

I’ve learned by making the food, raising the animals, growing food, preserving what we have, teaching my family, and figuring out what works in real life.

That’s the kind of education I want to share.

Not perfection.

Not complicated rules.

Just practical skills and traditional wisdom that families can learn and use in their own homes.

Shag Valley Farms

Our family life eventually became closely connected with Shag Valley Farms in Western Colorado.

The farm gave us another way to learn about food—from raising animals and caring for the land to preparing and preserving what we grow and produce.

It also became a place where I could share those experiences with other families.

Nourishing Modern Families

As the years went on, I realized that the things I was learning and teaching all connected.

Food.

Family.

Farming.

Traditional skills.

Community.

That became the foundation for Nourishing Modern Families.

Today, I teach classes, create educational resources, offer coaching, and share practical traditional food skills with families who want to learn.

I don’t believe we have to change everything at once.

Sometimes it starts with one recipe.

One meal.

One new skill.

One simple change.

And sometimes it starts by simply connecting with someone who is learning right alongside you.

That’s why I created Nourishing Modern Families.

Learn. Cook. Grow. Connect.
